XPan Stories: 12 Apostles - Post Cambell - Victoria

12 Apostles - Post Cambell - Victoria

This oft visited and photographed Victorian tourist icon risks becomming rather a cliche.  We timed this trip to have a full moon, and came down about an hour before dawn to shoot with the glow from the moon, and also the pre-dawn light reflected off the clouds.  I'd guess this is about a 60 second to 2 min exposure.

Today there is rather less to see with the large stack in front, and one of the rear ones crumbled into the sea.

XPan Stories: Fishing Boats - Queenscliff - Victoria

Fishing Boats - Queenscliff - Victoria

Until the recent re-deveopment, these tenders were one of my favourite places come and look on trips to Queenscliff; very hard however to photograph.  They need very still conditions with a high tide and good evening light.  This day just happened to be about perfect, so out into the water I waded.  I think part of what makes this images is the stark contrast between the cold blue shadow on the bow of the trawler and the warm light wrapping around the curves of the tenders in the foreground.

My Favourite Things: Laneways in the rain.

A wet morning just around the corner from Degraves Lane, I love Melbourne laneways on days like this.

XPan Stories: Looking North - Mt Blowhard - Victoria

Looking North - Mt Blowhard - Victoria

Getting there sounds like something out of a story book, you turn left on the main road, go down a bit, over the old wooden bridge, across the river, around the bend, turn right onto the gravel goat track and then slip and slide your way to the top and there you are; Mt Blowhard.  Consistently windy, and consistently beautiful from this one vantage point there are beautiful images to be made in every direction, I'll post more over the comming weeks, but start with one of my personal favourites.  Normally I don't like human made 'things' in my images, but I make exceptions for three things - Old fences, old sheds and wooden powerlines which make nice geometric patterns in with the landscape.

XPan Stories: Earthshine - Wilson Promentary - Victoria

Earthshine - Wilson Promentary - Victoria

We started out too late in the day, 3 or 4 in the afternoon to walk into Sealers Cove at the Prom.  Just as you get to the camp ground at the southern end of the bay you have to cross a river, which can either be very shallow, or this night due to a high tide, very deep.  It was almost dark dark when we got across, I was wet and it was cold.  But walking along the beach I knew we were in for a treat; A new crecent moon always sets, this means those beautiful fingernail moons always sit just above the western horizon, perfect for photography.  On the first and sometimes second day of the new moon the reflected light from the earth is enough to faintly illuminate the part of the moon in shadow, creating an phenonma called 'earthshine' which give me a thrill every time I see it.
